Enrichment for Small Mammals and Exotic Pets
نویسنده
چکیده
ENVIRONMENTAL ENRICHMENT A marked difference noted when comparing small mammals and exotic pets to their wild counterparts is the degree of complexity and interaction that exists in nature and the frequent lack of complexity and interaction in pet environments. While laboratories, zoos, and large-scale animal breeding facilities are encouraged or required to provide enrichment programs for their animals, the notion is unknown or only marginally accepted with pets. Many pets spend entire lives locked into sterile environments with little or no ability to express many behaviors natural to their species. Environmental enrichment is designed to modify the captive environment of an animal to promote natural behaviors and increase the general well being, while reducing stress and abnormal behaviors. Environmental enrichment programs require a basic understanding of the natural history and behavioral biology of a species. Enrichment programs should be capable of modification to meet specific needs of individual animals.

Excellence in exotics: enriching the lives of small exotic pet mammals.
All too often, clients ignore the concepts of environmental enrichment, socialization, and exercise for their small exotic pet mammals. Sometimes, these pets, such as guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, gerbils, and rats, live most of their lives in cages or tanks with little regard given to their mental and physical stimulation. With poor husbandry and inappropriate diets, animals become ...
متن کاملExotic Small Mammals as Potential Reservoirs of Zoonotic Bartonella spp.
To evaluate the risk for emerging human infections caused by zoonotic Bartonella spp. from exotic small mammals, we investigated the prevalence of Bartonella spp. in 546 small mammals (28 species) that had been imported into Japan as pets from Asia, North America, Europe, and the Middle and Near East. We obtained 407 Bartonella isolates and characterized them by molecular phylogenetic analysis ...
متن کاملInjuries, envenomations and stings from exotic pets.
A variety of exotic vertebrate and invertebrate species are kept as 'pets' including fishes, amphibians (for example, frogs and toads), reptiles (turtles, crocodiles, lizards and snakes), birds, mammals (for example, primates, civets, and lions), and invertebrates (for example spiders, scorpions, and centipedes), and ownership of some of these animals is rising. Data for 2009-2011 suggest that ...
متن کاملExotic Companion Mammal Zoonoses: Small Animals Can Have Big Consequences
Nearly two thirds of human diseases can be transmitted to animals. As veterinarians, however, we tend to use the term zoonosis when infections are transmitted from animals to humans. An estimated 75% of emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic, mainly of viral origin, and likely to be vector-borne. Among the major causes of these emerging diseases are alterations in human behavior and modifica...
متن کاملA+-Optimizing Anesthesia and Analgesia for Exotic Mammal Patients
Zoological small mammal species are commonly encountered in veterinary practice and include those kept as pets, maintained by laboratories and zoological collections, and those encountered as free-living species. Effective protocols for analgesia and anesthesia are critical to the provision of a high level of medical and surgical care for these species. Pain can have serious negative implicatio...
